Pre-Jam Progress

Some of my favorite childhood games were Space Quest, King's Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry. I really wanted to play Phantasmagoria and Harvester, but they were too violent, and pretty hard to find. We didn't have consoles in the house growing up, other than the NES, so I missed out on Resident Evil and Silent Hill when they came out, but I fell in love with them later. This project aims to marry the gameplay of the Sierra adventure games with the aesthetic of PS1 horror games.

I don't really have a process I'm following with this project. I started back in December with the visual content, courtesy of Elbolilloduro, getting it working in Unity. I tried it with HPSXRP at first and it worked well, but I decided to switch over to URP so I could use real-time shadows; I wasn't able to get baked shadows to look right, and since I'm not a PSX purist I am ok with the change. Better Fog and Retro Look Pro are being used in the project to help with the atmosphere and post processing.

I'm using Adventure Creator to drive the gameplay, it's something I've worked with quite a bit and find super easy to use. I downloaded a few extensions, like the graphics settings menu and the load / save with screenshots menus. The character animations all come from Kevin Iglesias' Mega Animation Pack.

Through January I spent time making the world navigable, I was able to complete most of the locations by the time Global Game Jam came around. I was volunteering at a local jam site, but I spent my time finishing up the locations that weren't yet working rather than participating. By the end of GGJ you could use the bus stop to travel between all of the locations, which I was super happy with. I spent a little bit of time afterwards polishing things up and fixing a couple bugs, then I cut this build.

At the moment I'm focusing on creating the actual gameplay, mainly the inventory items and how they can be used in the world. While I don't really have a predetermined narrative, I'd like to add something more fleshed out in the future.

That's all I really have for now, I'll post a followup again before the end of the 2024 32-bit Spring Cleaning Jam!
